At Kahurangi, we are dedicated to evolving and innovating in our sustainability journey, embodying the principles of kaitiakitanga - guardianship and protection of our natural resources. We take pride in our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint, collaborating with the University of Waikato towards a more sustainable future.

Sustainability - Kaitiakitanga

This is how we do our bit

  • Wherever possible, we prioritise sourcing ingredients from local suppliers, supporting regional and New Zealand businesses. Guided by our motto, “real chefs cooking real food,” we emphasise fresh, local produce, meats, and seafood, selecting and preparing them to retain maximum nutritional value.

    Local Ingredients Include:

Cambridge: Asparagus, Strawberries, Blueberries, Blackberries, Raspberries, Micros, Baby Vegetables, Mesclun, Rocket, Fancy Mix

    Pukekawa: Mushrooms, Potatoes, Onions

    Coromandel: Otto’s Free-Range Eggs

We are committed to providing a range of options to accommodate diverse dietary needs. For more information, please visit our visit our Nutrition & Food Safety page.

  • We minimise food waste through strategic ordering, careful planning, and tracking purchasing patterns, reducing waste before it even hits the plate. Our partnership with Free Little Pigs Farms enables us to effectively repurpose leftover food waste, all in compliance with MPI guidelines.

  • Throughout Montana Group, we apply a 'reduce, reuse, recycle' policy. We promote compostable packaging for disposables and encourage clients to opt for reusable crockery whenever possible. At Kahurangi, we print only essential kitchen sheets on 100% recycled paper, while all other operations are conducted electronically.

  • We utilise compostable packaging from Decent Package NZ for all takeaway items at our retail sites, ensuring that our practices align with sustainability principles. For hot beverages sold at these locations, we offer discounts for customers who bring reusable coffee cups, encouraging a reduction in single-use waste. Additionally, our partnership with Kaipaki Dairy and their milk tap system has eliminated the need for over 6,000 plastic bottles annually. Instead, we use 10-litre reusable pails that are cleaned and refilled daily, further supporting our commitment to sustainability.

  • Where possible and within our food safety practices, we actively work with our onsite team in the halls of residence to distribute surplus food from functions and ensure this food does not go to waste. This practice not only reduces food waste but also enriches the dining experience for students by offering a diverse variety of meals.

  • We’re proud to partner with sustainable suppliers, including:

    • Beef: The majority of our beef comes from Silver Fern Farms, a Toitū Certified Company, prioritising eco-friendly practices and animal welfare, with supplies sourced primarily from Dargaville, Hawera, and Te Aroha. Find out more about Silver Fern Farms.

    • Fish: Our fish is sourced from Sealord, and our Hoki is MSC-certified, supporting responsible fishing practices that protect marine habitats and fish populations. Learn more about Sealord’s sustainability initiatives.

  • At Montana Group, we are deeply committed to supporting conservation and environmental stewardship. We proudly sponsor Maungatautari Sanctuary Mountain's annual Gala Dinner, where our team provides exceptional food and beverages to help raise funds for this extraordinary project. As New Zealand’s largest fenced eco-sanctuary, the sanctuary plays a critical role in preserving native wildlife and fostering conservation. Through our partnership, we help enhance educational opportunities for local schools, promoting awareness of the sanctuary’s ecological importance and reinforcing our dedication to social and environmental responsibility.

In addition, our joint venture with Auckland Zoo highlights our long-standing commitment to conservation. Since 2018, we have contributed $50,000 annually to the Auckland Zoo Conservation Programme, supporting vital efforts to protect our natural environment.

At Kahurangi, we are always striving to improve our sustainability practices, ensuring a better future for our community and environment.
